Spotlight Star: June 2009

Kortney Nash

Kortney Nash is an adorable pint-sized star with an enormous talent in both acting and modeling. At seven-years-old she is bubbly, smart and captivates us all with her wide smile. Kortney began modeling at four months old, and had her first television performance on the Dave Chappelle Show. Since those beginning days, Kortney has also appeared on Saturday Night Live, in the movie You, and has been featured in over 50 commercials and ads, including print work for Sears and Tommy Hilfiger, and television spots for Tostitos, Dairy Queen, and Hallmark. You might also recognize her in the recent Orville Redenbacher commercial where she playfully commands her brother, played by Kofi Siriboe, and her dad to dress up and join her tea party before they can have any popcorn.

We’re excited to see Kortney in her second big screen role, playing the character “Mozambiqua” in Transformers 2 when it comes to theaters on June 24th. Full of energy and sweet magnetism, Kortney is bound to steal the show in future roles with her larger-than-life personality, and we know she is destined for even bigger successes! Young Black Starz: How did you like working on Transformers 2? What’s your character like?

Kortney Nash: I play the character of Mozambiqua. It was a lot of fun because we got to play in a swimming pool and on a slip slide. My character has three sisters so it was fun playing with the other girls. We were all around the same age. Tichina Arnold plays our mother.

YBS: What is your favorite part about acting and modeling?

Kortney: Everything. I love meeting new people, I love being on set. Going to wardrobe can be fun too because that’s when I get to try on a lot of different clothes.

YBS: Do you get shy at all when you’re modeling, acting, or working the red carpet?

Kortney: No, not really. I was born to do this. lol

YBS: How do you like the attention?

Kortney: I love the attention because I don’t get it all the time.

YBS: Do you have a favorite experience?

Kortney: All of my experiences have been fun. Each one is so different. So I have to say I like all of them.

YBS: Do you have any role models, people you look up to and want to be like?

Kortney: Keke Palmer. She’s beautiful. She has her own tv show and she’s been in movies. I also like Taylor Swift because she plays the acoustic and I’m learning how to play.

Kortney: I’m not home schooled, I go to a regular school and I love it except for PE when we have to run laps.

YBS: What’s it like being an only child?

Kortney: It’s good but my friend has a little brother and he’s really cute, I want one of those.

kortneynashandmomYoung Black Starz: What advice do you have for other young aspiring actors/models and their parents? Where should they start? Is there something you wish you knew before starting?

Ms. Nash: My advice to parents is to be realistic in their expectations and to make sure that they have the flexibility and time to pursue this for their child. We’ve been doing this for seven years, so trust me when I say it, things don’t happen overnight. I wrote a book called Baby Modeling & Beyond: From the Stroller to the Red Carpet that shares our experiences when Kortney was younger and doing a lot of print modeling. As for where parents should start, start with their kids and make sure that this is something that they really want to do. If your child is old enough to express genuine interest, get them in school plays and in acting classes to get them used to be in front of people. This is not the business for the meek. :) Get some headshots of your child and start submitting to agents. I always tell people to go to Aftra.org and check out their list of franchised agencies to make sure they are sending to legit agents. There are a lot of scam artists looking to separate you from your money so do your homework and investigate. If an opportunity is too good to sound true, it usually is.
