BIOGRAPHY
Keke Palmer’s Career Has Been Nothing Short Of A Miracle…
Born Lauren Keyana Palmer in Robbins, Illinois (a small suburban town twenty miles South of Chicago), Keke, (a nickname given to her at birth by her older sister), began her career in Chicago. She booked her very first movie at age nine, it was a small role in, “Barber Shop 2″, playing Queen Latifah’s precocious niece. What should have been a small forgettable role, Palmer turned into one of the funniest scenes in the entire movie. She was a tiny little thing going head to head with comedian, Cedric The Entertainer over a burnt hamburger! That one scene helped her to obtain a Hollywood agent and she was on her way. Upon arriving in California, Palmer did not waste any time. Within six weeks she had booked an episode of the critically acclaimed CBS show, “Cold Case”, booked a national K-Mart Commercial, and was chosen from a nationwide search to play opposite William H. Macy in a TNT movie. Her performance In, “The Wool Cap”, earned her a Screen Actors Guild Nomination, to date, she is the youngest actress, then at age ten, to have received a nomination in a lead actress category.
Palmer’s next role was that of a little girl from South Central Los Angeles with a gift for spelling difficult words. When she first heard the title of the movie, “Akeelah and the Bee”, she originally thought it was animation. She quickly learned that not only was it not a cartoon, but that her role of, Akeelah Anderson, was the title character of the movie! Later, upon learning that Laurence Fishburne and Angela Basset were to star in the movie as well, Palmer reportedly said, “This is going to be a great movie”. Akeelah and the Bee was highly critically acclaimed, unfortunately, it did not fair as well at The Box Office. However, the DVD sells went through the roof! School Boards throughout the country started purchasing the movie for their classrooms! Palmer is recognized everywhere she goes as the shy, studious Akeelah, and that makes her feel very proud to have played the role.
Palmer is also a singer/songwriter having sang in her gospel church choir back in Illinois since the age of five. Her mother was Choir Director, and her Father, A Deacon. Palmer spent many a Sunday mornings singing gospel hymn’s, and performing in countless youth day programs. So, when Atlantic Records signed her to a major recording contract at the tender age of twelve, no one in Chicago was surprised. Her single entitled, “Footworkin” will be out in July 2007. She is currently preparing to shoot a video for the single, which she is very excited about. Her debut album is entitled : Keke Palmer : So Uncool. Palmer chose the title after reading the definition of uncool: “Not in accord with the standards or mores of a specified group”. She instantly thought that the word “uncool” was very cool, especially the part about, “not in accord with other people’s standards”. She has chosen music that is youthful, and fun, and because of her clean lyrics, some might even say “Uncool”. But Palmer wants everyone to know that just because her music is clean, that does not mean her beats are not tight! Even though she is only 13 (she will be 14 by the time her album hits stores) she carefully chose music that would appeal to an older audience as well: “I just kept listening to my songs over and over again asking myself would Loreal (her 18 year old sister) listen to this, and that is how I picked my music.” She has been called the voice of a new generation, she knows with that comes much responsibility, and she does not take that lightly.
Currently, she is co-starring in Disney Channel’s, Jump In, with High School Musical’s Corbin Bleu. She has also just wrapped filming a feature film with Samuel L. Jackson, Eva Mendez, and Ed Harris called “Cleaner”, which will be out Fall 2007. She has also had three songs out on movie soundtracks : “Jumpin” and “It’s My Turn Now” (Jump In Soundtrack), “Tonight” (Night At The Museum Soundtrack). And, she was asked by Grammy Award winning Rapper Ludacris to be in his video Runaway Love where she had an opportunity to work with one of her idols, Mary J. Blige.
In January 2007 she was nominated for an NAACP Image Award, for her heartwarming performance in, Akeelah and the Bee. Her fellow nominees were: Beyonce Knowles, Penelope Cruz, Queen Latifah, and Sanaa Lathan. The room erupted in huge applauds when Palmer’s name was called as the winner, she received a standing ovation. During an interview Palmer reportedly said, “I am so happy for Akeelah she was a great character to play and I hope that God will continue to bless me with great roles”.
Whenever she is asked which does she prefer, acting or singing? Her answer remains the same: “I love them both. I actually started singing first and thought I Would be a singer like my mother, but I absolutely love acting too, I can’t choose”!
Look for her single, “Keep It Movin”, Her album “So Uncool” to hit stores Sept. 2007. Her film “Cleaner” hits theaters Fall 2007
