Rest In Sweet Peace, Jasmina!
We are very pleased to announce that little Jasmina Anema (story), the 6-year-old girl that we posted about months ago who was suffering from a rare and deadly form of Leukemia and urgently needed a bone marrow donor, is doing very well! Jasmina was blessed to find not one, but two matches in May and underwent a bone marrow transplant on June 11, 2009. The matches were only “near perfect“, so she was not exactly in the clear as doctors were not sure if her little body would reject the marrow or not. However it has now been over a month since Jasmina has had her transplant and she is said to be doing very well! Jasmina announced via her Twitter page today that she may be going home soon, “I am doing good, might be going home next week if all goes well. I am soooo excited, this is after 6 months!!!” she said.
We here at YBS are soooo excited for you too Jasmina!!! We are also glad to see that more African Americans are now registered donors as a result; now even more lives can be saved!
Under the break you can see a video of a very energetic Jasmina dancing to Kelly Rowland while she celebrated a weekend home from the hospital in May.

I know that this has nothing to do with any of our Young Black Starz, but this is a story that really touched my heart and I wanted to post about it.
The little cutie in the picture is 6-year-old Jasmina Anema. On January 20th 2009 Jasmina was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of Leukemia that could take her life in as little as two months. She celebrated her birthday a few days ago on March 4th in the hospital undergoing treatments.
Jasmina is in urgent need of a bone marrow transplant from a donor; you could be the “One For Jasmina”. Since she was adopted, she doesn’t have the possibility of having a family donor, and the rates of African Americans donating are very low, making it hard for African American patients to find a match.
Many celebrities like Rihanna and Kelly Rowland have dedicated their time to helping her find a match. Today there’s a bone marrow donor registration drive in New York called “One for Jasmina”, at Jasmina’s school, PS41 (116 West 11th Street between 6th & 7th Avenues). Although it may be too late for you to attend, you can still make a difference!
If you are 18-55 years old you can order a do-it-yourself registration kit HERE. All it takes is sending a swabbed sample of the inside of your mouth to see if you can be a match to save a life. Tell as many people as you know about this precious girl’s story, and let them know that they can find out if they are a match too. Please pray for Jasmina’s health, and for the strength of her family. For more information on how you can help, visit www.oneforjasmina.com .
The video below is narrated by Jamina’s best friend, and it shows how much life is in little Jasmina. Click on the little shape below to view it. Please, spread the word and share the video with someone; YOU could save her life!!!
