Hey YBS Readers!! Speaking of reading, I am currently reading a book titled Saved Folk in the House by Sonnie Beverly. The book is 55 chapters long and so far so good. I’m really liking it! Saved Folk in the House tells the story of 3 women journeying through life while dealing with different issues. As you learn more about their struggles, you also learn more about the women and their characters. I would recommend this book to the teenage age group, although it may be good reading for those of other ages as well!
Are any of you currently reading any good books?! If so, please do share!

Need some words of encouragement to help you reach your dreams? If so, we recommend two books that will help get you on the right track. “Letters to a Young Brother: MANifest Your Destiny” and “Letters to a Young Sister: DeFINE Your Destiny” are by actor Hill Harper from CSI: New York. Both books are in the form of letters written from Hill, and cover a range of issues, from relationships, self-respect and peer pressure, to finances, careers and following one’s dreams.
Hill speaks to the reader in a down-to-earth and relatable voice on struggles and themes that young people face everyday. Not only does he give his advice and encouragement, he also sought out other influential people to lend their words of experience, including Senator Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama, actress Gabrielle Union, actress Sanaa Lathan, football star Curtis Martin, and hip hop artist Nas, among a multitude of other successful people.
Be sure to check out these two books at your local library or HERE and HERE at Amazon.com.
To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, takes place during the Great Depression and tells the story of a father (Atticus Finch) and his children experiencing the different and critical views of society. Atticus Finch takes on the task of defending a black man that is put on trial. Along with a task that is difficult for someone during that time period, Atticus faces criticism for his morals and values as well. The children in the book, Scout and Jeremy, not only discover new things about their father, they also learn more about the ways of society and have situations of their own through out the story. To Kill a Mockingbird is told through the memory of Scout and is a touching and compelling story that is a must read!
Personal View
Not only is the novel interesting but it keeps you wanting to read more and you can really capture the images in your head. The book allows you to view things during that time through the innocent eyes of a child. I think the message of the book goes beyond the actual story. After reading this book, I was touched and moved in a positive way. To Kill a Mockingbird is easy reading and I’d definitely recommend it!
The Five People You Meet in Heaven, by Mitch Albom, is a book that shows heaven is not only a place but also an answer. The novel takes you on a journey with Eddie, the main character, as he goes through heaven learning what his life really meant. During his time on earth, Eddie would have never thought of the things he is told while in heaven. The many events that take place in the story are filled with meaning.
Personal View
If there was just a select few books that illustrated how everything happens for a reason, The Five People You Meet in Heaven would be one of the select. I like how Eddie, the main character, is shown how people in his life who he may have thought had no importance actually played a role in his being. The book makes you want to consider the little things you come across in life. The Five People You Meet in Heaven is a book that I think many people will enjoy reading!
