Sixteen year old Gabrielle Douglas made history yesterday (August 2, 2012) when she became the 1st African American to win the Olympic Gold Medal in the Women’s Individual All-Around Gymnastics and the first American gymnast to win the Gold for both the Individual All-Around and Team competition in the same Games!
Before her big win, Gabby had so much faith in her ability to make history! She had the amazing opportunity to meet her favorite gymnast, Dominique Dawes who was the first African American female to have ever earned an Olympic Gold medal in gymnastics in 1996. She talked about what it would be like if she won. All in all, she just wanted others to say, “If Gabby can do it, I can do it!”
Following the All-Around Gold win, Gabby gave much credit to God saying, “It’s kind of a win-win situation. The glory goes up to Him and the blessings fall down on me.”
Gabby has two more chances to win medals in the 2012 Summer Olympics and she is already on a box of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes that will be hitting the stores this Fall! Her accomplishments have surely inspired many all around the world!
Congratulations, Gabrielle!
