Rhyon Nicole Brown has definitely made a name for herself in the entertainment industry! Her personality, talent and passion shines in every project she takes on. The 15-year-old made her television debut at a young age in a variety of commercials and soon became the face in print ads for brands like Disney and The Gap. Since then she has captivated audiences everywhere with television appearances and recurring roles in several shows and also starred in the film ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’, with rapper 50 Cent. This year you can catch her on ABC Family’s hit television series, ‘Lincoln Heights’ as Lizzie Sutton.

Rhyon took the time out of her busy schedule to tell us why she is pursuing her dreams and what’s coming up next. Here is what she had to say:

Young Black Starz: Throughout the month there are numerous events running across the country, encapsulating various facets of Black history and culture – what would your dream event be?

Rhyon Nicole Brown: Sometimes when we look at history we look way back into our pasts and at times we fail to realize that we have legends living among us, one being Oprah Winfrey. I don’t have just one event that i would like to create but I would like to pattern my life after hers where she uses her blessings to bless others.

YBS: Name a website, book, show, movie, or other work that you would recommend to someone with an interest in black culture or black history, and why?

RNB: A poem that I was introduced to not too long ago was a poem called “Ain’t I a Woman?” by Sojourner Truth, it really shows the strength of an African American woman, and shows how strong we truly are although at times we are portrayed as weak.

YBS: Why are you proud to carry African American heritage and why is it important to you to?

RNB: I am proud to be an African American because I believe that our heritage alone provides us with strength. Where we came from shows that we have got endurance, to get through struggles, minds to invent things that change the world. (Because I definitely don’t know what i would do without a pressing comb!:) ) But I think as African Americans we set a high standard and i hope to be one of the ones who
raise that bar one day.

YBS: Will you be doing anything special during Black History Month. To celebrate or to educate yourself?

RNB: I plan on reading the autobiography of Malcolm X.

YBS: How do you feel your work has inspired other young black girls and boys? Who has inspired you to follow your dreams?

RNB: I believe i have allowed other young black girls and boys to see that you are never too young to begin achieving your goals no matter how “impossible” they seem sometimes, with God you can do ANYTHING. For one, my parents have inspired me and they have provided me with all of the support I need. And I look up to Ruby Dee and Sydney Portier because they have taken us so far and without their hard work and others like them I wouldn’t be where I am today.

YBS: What projects do you have coming up, other than working on the 3rd season of Lincoln Heights?

RNB: Well, besides being on ‘Lincoln Heights’ I am reading and considering a project that I am not allowed to discuss right now. I am a student at a regular high school which keeps me pretty busy. I also run track, so as of now I am just being a regular kid, but we will be back to work really soon for season three of Lincoln Heights! Happy Black History Month!!

Season 3 of ‘Lincoln Heghts’ will be filming soon and Rhyon and the rest of the cast should be back in Fall 2008. To find out out more about Rhyon, check out her profile HERE!
