Last week YBS had the opportunity to do our very first phone interview with the young, upcoming actress Yara Shahidi of “Imagine That“. You can now listen to the interview with Yara by clicking on the banner. This interview with Yara was so fun to do! She is so advanced for her years and after speaking with her, she is most definitely one of the smartest 9 year old we have ever encountered. We were talking about things like the Renaissance and the Parthenon, stuff people would be used to discussing with college students, not 9 year olds!
This girl is going places, we at YBS are pretty sure about that, and with looks and a killer personality to match, nothing’s stopping her! Check out our interview with her to get the low down on her experiences working with Eddie Murphy and Nicole Ari Parker, who she called “FABtabulous“, if she would want a GooGaa in real life and why she wants to be a historian when she grows up.
Thanks to Yara for being a great interviewee and for taking the time to call us… and thanks to you guys for sending in some questions for us!
Kortney Nash, who is currently starring as Mozambiqua in Transformers 2, talks about why it’s important to take care of the earth in her promo video for the organization Habitat Heroes. She also tells us what her family does at home to help save the environment. View the video below; Kortney seems really passionate about the environment! Too cute.

Bobb’e J. Thompson and Keke Palmer attended the BET 2009 Awards last night and presented alongside Anthony Anderson. Before announcing Jamie Foxx’s performance they both paid tribute to Michael Jackson in a little performance. Keke sang a segment of the song “Who’s Lovin’ You” and Bobb’e showed us some of his best MJ moves! Keke says that the tribute was a last minute request that she couldn’t refuse. Her performance has been one of the most talked about on the entire show, and of course, that makes us proud!

YBS was shocked and saddened to hear the tragic news of Michael Jackson’s death yesterday. He is a legendary icon that has lived throughout our lives and we never imagined a life without his presence. Many of the YBS Starz hold him as their inspiration for working in the industry so we thought, as tribute to his memory, we would post some of the reactions a few of the Starz have posted up about MJ and what he meant to them:
Kwame: IT’S A SAD DAY IN THE WORLD 2DAY R.I.P. MICHAEL JACKSON THANK YOU FOR ALL THE MEMORIES…HEAVEN WILL BE ONE BIG PARTY DANCING TO YOUR HITS!
Chelsea Tavares: Michael Jackson is one amazing man. his originality and creativeness inspired all of us. he knew wat he wanted since he was 5 yrs old. and he put his all into it, and achieved it! although there will NEVER be anotha MJ, he makes ppl want 2 accomplish the same goals as he did. and thats what im aiming 4! He’s part of history. he made music wat it is 2day. this is so surreal. my prayers go out 2 the Jackson’s. ily all!
Nieko Mann: 6/25/2009 RIP…MR Michael Jackson My Prayers are def. with your family at this most tragic time!
Sierra McClain: RIP the KING OF POP………your spirit and your music will live on……..
Tommi Williams: R.I.P Michael Jackson :’( such a legend .. so sad that he passed at 50. =[
Jamia Nash Family: The Nash Family is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Michael Jackson…He remains the sole inspiration of our dreams and aspirations in the entertainment industry…Rest in peace!
Yara Shahidi: Wow… I am very sad that one of my most favorite musicians died this week. Mr. Michael Jackson was an awesome dancer, singer, songwriter and person. If you have a chance, listen to some of his music.
Michael was one of the first Young Black Starz, starting his career at age 5, and proved himself to be a true talent from a very young age. We are so lucky to have lived during his lifetime and to have experienced some of his genius first hand. He will be missed but his spirit will live on through his timeless music.
Keke Palmer also posted a video about Michael on YouTube earlier today, which you can view by clicking read more. You can also see some of the Starz performing songs by Michael or the Jackson 5 as our musical tribute to him!
Please send your prayers up for The Jackson Family and all of those who were near and dear to him, especially his 3 young children! If you are one of the Starz and want your message to MJ included in this post, please email us.

Yara is very smart for her age and you’ll enjoy her interviews! Be sure to watch the video at the end of the interview of Yara talking about the Summer Reading Challenge for Scholastic. By the way, Imagine That is a great movie! I really enjoyed it! If you haven’t gotten out to see it yet, make sure that you do!
In the movie, your character, Olivia, has imaginary friends and she’s really attached to her blanket. Have you ever had imaginary friends? Do you have a security blanket?Yara: Well, I have a security blanket, but it’s not for security. It’s more like remembering, kind of. And I don’t have any imaginary friends, but I do have my brothers.
How many brothers do you have?
Yara: Two. One’s 6 and one’s about to turn 1.
Do you like to play with them?
Yara: Yes, and when we have enough time, we’ll build these houses out of Legos. And we pretend to be neighbors.
This was your first movie?
Yara: Yes, it is.
Was it exciting? Was it scary in any way?
Yara: Well, it was really exciting. I thought of it as a long, fun commercial, because I’m a commercial actress too and I work with my mom a lot. And everybody was really nice on set.
